Interview With Professional Wingfoiler Fabián Muhmentaler

Fabian is a young athlete from Tarifa, a pioneer in the sport of Wingfoil who is always looking to expand his knowledge and perfect his level in the water.
The wingfoil is for him the most efficient way to harness the energy of the ocean, and after much effort and dedication, Fabi has become a master in the art of flying over the water with the hydrofoil.
Do you want to know more about his career and his vision of the sport?
Take a look at these 5 questions we asked this great person and great rider!

How did you discover wingfoil and what attracted you most to this sport compared to other modalities such as kitesurfing or windsurfing?

I discovered wingfoil in the summer of 2019. While with my friend Max in Bologna, it was the first time we saw it live (with very rudimentary material) and we had the opportunity to try it. Later, during the first months of 2020, I had the opportunity to start doing this sport with more advanced material. Coming out of the great quarantine of 2020, in my head I could only think about doing that sport.
That’s how from that summer I focused 100% on this modality and from the first moment I knew it was driving me crazy. What hooked me the most compared to other water and wind sports was its efficient way of harnessing the energy of the ocean.

What are the main technical challenges in wingfoil, and how do you face them during your sessions?

The most complicated thing is learning to understand how the foil works and feeling comfortable with it. At first, this part is the most difficult, but by choosing the right material and with a little patience you can master it perfectly. It is important not to be in a hurry to take a very small board and gradually go down in size progressively.

What makes Tarifa a special place to practice wingfoil and what advice would you give to those who come to enjoy this sport here?

I consider that Tarifa may be one of the best places in the world to practice wingfoil due to its wide variety of conditions and its enormous number of windy days per year.
The good thing about this sport is that it is not as demanding in terms of perfect conditions as windsurfing or kiting, and that is why, in Tarifa there are a large number of perfect days for this sport in addition to having many different and quite safe spots.

How has wingfoil changed you on a personal level? Are there lessons or learnings that you have applied in your life outside of the water?

Well, in general, I consider water sports to teach you a lot in life due to the degree of commitment and sacrifice it requires. With my windsurfing friends Max and Miguel, with whom I started in water sports, we have always talked about how these sports really end up being a lifestyle due to the degree of commitment they require.
I would say that the greatest lesson learned is respect for nature and its great strength, and learning to be patient and not achieve things quickly but with patience and work.

How do you see the future of wingfoil and its growth in popularity compared to other water sports?

I consider that foil specifically is a tool that has come into our lives to stay and make everything in general more efficient. I don’t think it’s going to disappear or be a fad. The hydrofoil gives the sensation of flying over the surface of the water and takes advantage of the energy of the sea in a very beautiful and unique way to experience. In addition, it turns many days of wind or bad waves into great ones. sessions that will remain to be remembered.
To sum up

This is how Fabian has managed to be among the best in this sport today. A lot of passion and understanding of the material have made him a benchmark in national and international wingfoil.
